Recently, the market has begun to discuss a new standard for Ethereum: EIP-6551.It is worth noting that this standard has not been officially included by Ethereum and is still in the draft stage. Therefore, strictly speaking, it cannot be called an Ethereum standard, but can only be called a standard proposal. Why does a standard proposal that is still in the draft stage attract everyone's attention?I think there may be several main reasons:First, at the recent Ethereum developer conference, there were quite a few high-profile star projects based on this proposed standard.Second, this proposal gives NFT strong scalability and operability: it can associate multiple wallets with one NFT. The wallet can store various tokens and conduct various transactions. Therefore, the NFT attached to the wallet theoretically becomes "smart" and powerful. Its intelligence and power can be fully utilized by developers. Third, the proposal itself has strong forward compatibility. It can be used by all NFTs currently on Ethereum. It only requires some additional development and does not require major changes to the original NFTs. This brings a glimmer of light and hope to the NFT ecosystem that is currently in trouble. There are currently not many projects that have been launched based on this standard. There are two that I know of: one is Sapienz (https://www.sapienz.xyz/) and the other is The Managers (https://themanagers.wtf/).For these two NFT projects, I participated as soon as I learned about them. But frankly, I think the way they use this proposed standard is still uncreative and not bold enough. But this is at least some exploration on their way forward. If we explore along the technical framework of this proposal, we will find that if the proposal really has some broad application scenarios, then in that imagined scenario, an NFT and its associated wallet are likely to implement some complex behavior and conduct a large number of transactions. But looking at the current technical architecture of Ethereum, this may lead to two problems:First, these complex behaviors inevitably imply complex security issues. If the implementation of these behaviors is still on the blockchain, it will be a considerable challenge. Second, if all these transactions are conducted on the Ethereum main network, it will inevitably mean high handling fees. These handling fees may be unbearable for ordinary users. The second problem above may be solved with a second or third layer solution. But the first problem may need to be solved in other ways. In short, after reading this protocol, on the one hand, I can really feel its power, but on the other hand, I think of the increasingly heavy burden on Ethereum.I read three articles over the weekend:The first article is Vitalik’s positive evaluation of the Bitcoin Inscription protocol in a certain Twitter space; The second article is an article published by Vitalik a while ago expressing concerns about the increasing responsibility of the Ethereum consensus.;The third article is the idea of Ethereum changing from complexity to simplicity mentioned in Gu Qianfeng’s recent article. The third of these three articles is a summary and association of the first two articles. It expresses such an idea:Almost all functions of Ethereum are now implemented by smart contracts, and the immutability of smart contracts (or the cumbersome change process) brings huge challenges to today's increasingly complex applications.Under this situation, the emergence of the Bitcoin Inscription Protocol is precisely an exploration from complexity to simplicity, trying to achieve scalability and complex functions in a minimalist way. Therefore, its emergence brought a sense of crisis to the Ethereum community, and even attracted Vitalik's attention. If you look at it according to the standards of "traditional" and "simplified", there is no doubt that EIP-6551 is another "heavy" innovation. This kind of innovation certainly deserves attention, praise and admiration. But now I am more looking forward to seeing another kind of "concise" and lightweight innovation explode in the Ethereum ecosystem. In the crypto world, welcome to communicate and discuss together!
